What Experts Say
Iron polymaltose complex is a non ionic iron compound made of iron hydroxide bound to a polymaltose carrier. Unlike ferrous salts such as ferrous sulfate, it does not release free iron ions in the stomach, so it causes far less irritation to the gastric lining and less metallic taste in most patients.
Doctors often recommend this form for patients who stopped ferrous iron tablets earlier because of nausea, constipation or stomach pain. Better tolerance usually means better adherence, and adherence is what actually corrects anemia over time, not the specific iron salt that is chosen for treatment.
Response to treatment is generally confirmed with a repeat hemoglobin and serum ferritin test after four to six weeks of regular use. Most clinical guidelines recommend continuing iron therapy for a few months after hemoglobin normalizes, since iron stores rebuild more slowly than hemoglobin itself does.
