What Experts Say
Metronidazole works by entering anaerobic bacterial and protozoal cells, where oxygen-poor conditions allow it to be reduced into reactive compounds that bind and damage microbial DNA. This selective activation explains why it targets anaerobes and protozoa effectively while sparing most aerobic bacteria that normally live in the gut.
Oral tablets are absorbed almost completely from the gastrointestinal tract, giving predictable blood levels that support once daily to thrice daily dosing schedules depending on the infection being treated. Because absorption is reliable and consistent, tablets remain the preferred form once a patient can swallow and tolerate regular oral intake without vomiting.
Clinicians pair tablet therapy with a strict alcohol ban, since metronidazole blocks an enzyme the liver needs to break down alcohol, producing flushing, nausea and a rapid heartbeat within minutes of drinking. The same liver enzyme pathway explains why a lower dose or longer dosing interval is needed in patients with significant liver impairment.
