What Experts Say
Mirabegron belongs to a class of medicines called beta-3 adrenergic agonists. It works by relaxing the detrusor muscle in the bladder wall during the storage phase of the urinary cycle. This action increases the bladder capacity to hold urine and reduces the sudden urge to void. Unlike older overactive bladder medicines, it does not block muscarinic receptors, so dry mouth and constipation are less common with this drug.
Clinical trials have shown mirabegron significantly reduces the number of incontinence episodes and daily urination frequency compared with placebo. Doctors often prescribe it when antimuscarinic drugs such as oxybutynin or solifenacin cause intolerable side effects or fail to control symptoms adequately. It can also be combined with these drugs for added effect in resistant cases.
Mirabegron can raise blood pressure in some patients, so doctors usually check blood pressure before starting treatment and periodically during therapy, especially in those with existing hypertension. Response to treatment is generally assessed after four to eight weeks, and the dose may be increased if tolerated and needed for adequate symptom relief.
