What Experts Say
Moxifloxacin is a fourth generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It works by blocking two bacterial enzymes, DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which bacteria need to copy their genetic material. This dual action makes it bactericidal, so infection clears faster than with older fluoroquinolones like ciprofloxacin.
Doctors prefer moxifloxacin eye drops because the molecule covers a wide range of organisms behind conjunctivitis and keratitis. It stays active against many gram-positive cocci, including some resistant staphylococcal strains, and common gram-negative organisms found in ocular infections. This broad coverage often removes the need to switch antibiotics while culture results are pending.
The topical solution reaches high concentration in the tear film and corneal tissue within minutes of instillation, while systemic absorption stays minimal. This localized action lowers body-wide side effect risk compared to oral fluoroquinolones, though mild local irritation can still occur. Its self-preserving formulation limits added preservative-related irritation.
