What Experts Say
Nimenrix is a conjugate vaccine that combines capsular polysaccharides from meningococcal groups A, C, W-135 and Y with a tetanus toxoid protein carrier. This conjugation improves the immune response, especially in young children, and helps create longer lasting immune memory compared to older polysaccharide only vaccines.
Meningococcal disease can progress very quickly from fever to severe complications such as meningitis or bloodstream infection within hours. Vaccination is an important preventive step, particularly for infants, students living in shared accommodation, and travelers heading to regions with seasonal outbreaks or mass gatherings.
The vaccination schedule depends on age at first dose, ranging from a two dose primary series in early infancy to a single dose in older children, adolescents and adults. A booster may be recommended for people at continued risk of exposure, and the vaccine is usually given as an injection into the muscle of the thigh or upper arm.
