What Experts Say
Saline nasal preparations work through simple osmotic action rather than any drug based mechanism. A 0.9 percent sodium chloride solution matches the natural salt concentration of body fluids, so it hydrates the nasal lining without pulling extra fluid out of the tissue or causing irritation.
Ear, nose and throat specialists frequently recommend saline nasal rinses as a first line and adjunct measure for colds, allergic rhinitis and sinus congestion. Unlike medicated decongestant sprays containing oxymetazoline or xylometazoline, isotonic saline carries no risk of rebound congestion even with repeated daily use.
Because it contains no active drug beyond salt and water, this formulation is considered appropriate across a wide age range, including young children and pregnant women, provided the device is used with clean technique and never shared between users.
