What Experts Say
Cefadroxil belongs to the first generation cephalosporin class of antibiotics. It works by disrupting the bacterial cell wall, which causes the bacteria to weaken and die. This bactericidal action makes it effective against a range of gram positive organisms and select gram negative strains commonly responsible for throat, skin & urinary infections.
Clinicians often prescribe this suspension for children because dosing is based on body weight & can be adjusted easily using the calibrated measuring cup. Completing the full course, even after symptoms improve, is important. Stopping early allows surviving bacteria to develop resistance, which can make future infections harder to treat.
Patients with a known penicillin allergy should mention this before starting Cefadroxil, since cross reactivity between penicillins and cephalosporins can occur in a small percentage of cases. Dose adjustment is also needed in children or adults with reduced kidney function, since the drug is cleared through the kidneys. A pediatrician should confirm suitability before use.
