What Experts Say
Cardiologists prescribe clopidogrel with low dose aspirin because the two drugs block platelet aggregation through different pathways, giving more complete protection than either agent alone. Clopidogrel inhibits the P2Y12 receptor while aspirin blocks thromboxane A2 production, and this dual action is considered standard care after stent placement or acute coronary events.
Physicians typically limit dual antiplatelet therapy to a defined period, often six to twelve months post stenting, because prolonged use raises bleeding risk without proportional cardiac benefit in most patients. Monitoring for bruising, gastrointestinal bleeding and unusual fatigue is routine during follow up visits.
Doctors across Pakistan note that treatment response can vary due to genetic differences in clopidogrel metabolism, and patients who continue to have clotting events despite therapy may need platelet function testing. Renal and hepatic function are also checked periodically since impaired clearance can alter drug levels and bleeding risk.
