What Experts Say
Carboxymethylcellulose sodium is a cellulose derivative that acts as a lubricant and viscosity building agent on the surface of the eye. It forms a thin, uniform layer over the cornea and conjunctiva that closely mimics the eye's own natural tear film.
This added viscosity slows the evaporation of tears and reduces friction between the eyelid and the eye surface with every blink, which is the main source of relief in dry, gritty or tired eyes. A more stable tear film also helps protect the surface from everyday irritants like dust, wind and prolonged screen glare.
Because carboxymethylcellulose sodium is not meaningfully absorbed into the bloodstream, it carries a very favorable safety profile and can generally be used as often as needed for comfort. People who wear contact lenses, or who use other eye drops, should still leave a short gap between applications for the best effect.
