About ORS
ORS is a WHO formula electrolyte and glucose powder used at home to prevent dehydration from diarrhea or vomiting.
Uses
- Prevents dehydration caused by diarrhea in children and adults
- Treats mild to moderate dehydration from vomiting or diarrhea
- Helps replace fluids and salts lost during heatstroke or excessive sweating
- Supports recovery during fever, food poisoning, or stomach infections
- Used as a first aid measure for dehydration at home before reaching a doctor
- Helps maintain hydration during intense physical activity or hot weather
What Experts Say
Doctors describe oral rehydration salts as one of the most effective low cost interventions in modern medicine. The WHO formula restores fluid and electrolyte balance faster than plain water alone, since it uses the sodium glucose co transport mechanism to pull fluid back into the body through the intestinal wall.
Pediatricians recommend keeping ORS at home year round, since diarrhea and vomiting can turn into dangerous dehydration within hours in young children. Physicians note that early rehydration reduces the chances of hospital admission and intravenous fluid therapy.
Health experts caution that ORS treats dehydration, it does not treat the underlying infection causing it. Persistent vomiting, blood in stool, high fever, or a child who refuses to drink still needs urgent medical evaluation.

How to use ORS?
- Empty one full sachet into 200ml of clean, boiled and cooled water
- Stir well until the powder dissolves completely
- Do not add sugar, salt, or any other substance to the mixed solution
- Give small, frequent sips rather than one large amount at a time
- Prepare a fresh solution every time, do not reuse leftover mixed solution from earlier in the day
- For infants, give small sips using a clean spoon or cup, not a feeding bottle unless advised by a doctor
Drug Interactions
- Other Electrolyte Supplements: Taking ORS together with other potassium or sodium supplements can raise electrolyte levels higher than needed
- Kidney Disease Medicines: People being treated for kidney disease should check with their doctor first, since ORS affects sodium and potassium handling in the body
- Diuretics: Water pills used for blood pressure or heart conditions can interact with the salt content of ORS, so medical advice is recommended
- ACE Inhibitors Or Potassium Sparing Medicines: These can raise potassium levels further when combined with ORS, so caution is advised
Risks and warnings
- Mixing Ratio: Always dissolve the full sachet in the exact amount of water mentioned on the pack. A stronger or weaker mixture can worsen dehydration or disturb the body's salt balance
- Water Quality: Use only clean, boiled and cooled, or safe bottled water. Contaminated water can introduce new infection while treating dehydration
- Danger Signs In Children: Sunken eyes, dry mouth, no tears while crying, reduced urination, unusual sleepiness, or a soft spot that looks sunken on a baby's head need urgent medical care right away
- Severe Dehydration: If vomiting continues despite ORS, or if there is blood in stool or vomit, seek emergency care instead of relying on ORS alone
- Kidney Disease: People with kidney problems should use ORS only under medical guidance, since their body may not clear excess sodium and potassium normally
- Diabetes: People with diabetes should monitor blood sugar closely, since ORS contains glucose
ORS Side Effects
- Mild bloating or a feeling of fullness
- Nausea if taken too quickly
- Mild stomach discomfort
- Vomiting if consumed in large amounts at once
- Swelling in hands, feet, or face in case of overuse, which needs medical attention
- Irregular heartbeat in rare cases of excess intake, especially in kidney disease
Storage Conditions
- Store the unmixed sachet in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
- Keep away from moisture, since the powder can clump if exposed to humidity
- Keep out of reach of children
- Mix with clean water only at the time of use
- Discard the mixed solution after 24 hours, even if refrigerated
- Do not use the sachet if the powder looks discolored or clumped
