What Experts Say
Oral rehydration solutions work through a simple gut mechanism. Glucose and sodium are absorbed together through the same transport channel in the intestine, which pulls water along with them. This is why a balanced mix of salts and sugar rehydrates the body faster than water alone.
The World Health Organization updated its original formula to a lower osmolarity version, since research showed it reduces stool output, vomiting, and the need for additional intravenous fluids in most cases of diarrhea related dehydration. This updated formula is now the global standard for oral rehydration therapy.
Correct mixing matters as much as the formula itself. Less water than instructed makes the solution too concentrated, which can worsen dehydration, while more water dilutes the electrolytes below an effective level. A doctor's input is advised for infants, the elderly, or anyone with kidney or heart disease.

- The full sachet content is dissolved in the exact amount of clean, boiled and cooled water mentioned on the pack, usually one liter.
- Stirring until the powder fully dissolves is important before the solution is given.
- Small, frequent sips generally work better than a large amount at once, especially for children.
- A freshly prepared solution is best used within 24 hours and then discarded.
- Continued breastfeeding or normal feeding alongside the solution is generally recommended for infants.
Drug Interactions
- Diuretics: Water pills change how the body handles sodium and potassium, so combined use needs monitoring.
- ACE Inhibitors And Potassium Sparing Diuretics: These can raise potassium levels further when combined with a potassium containing solution.
- Other Oral Medicines: Very large fluid volumes taken close together with other oral drugs can occasionally affect how quickly those drugs are absorbed.
Risks and warnings
- Incorrect Dilution: Less water than directed can make the solution too concentrated and worsen dehydration.
- Kidney Disease: People with kidney problems need medical guidance, since the salt and potassium content can build up.
- Heart Conditions: Patients with heart failure should use this solution under medical supervision because of its sodium content.
- Severe Dehydration: Signs like sunken eyes, no urination, or extreme lethargy need urgent medical care, since intravenous fluids may be required.
- Diabetes: Blood sugar should be monitored, since the solution contains glucose.
