Gastrolyte is an oral rehydration salt. It supplies sodium, potassium and citrate, the minerals the body loses fastest during diarrhea and vomiting. Replacing them helps the body hold on to the water it drinks. This is why plain water, tea or soft drinks are not enough during severe diarrhea.

Oral rehydration is the first treatment recommended worldwide for dehydration from diarrhea, including in children. Small frequent sips work better than drinking a large amount at once, especially when there is nausea. Keep offering the drink even if the child or adult vomits once, as some fluid is still absorbed. Salty snacks or plain rice can be added once the vomiting settles.

The sachet must be mixed with exactly the amount of clean water stated on the pack. Too little water makes the drink too salty, and too much makes it less effective. How to use ORS Gastrolyte?

• Empty one sachet into the exact amount of clean drinking water stated on the pack and stir until dissolved.
• Give small, frequent sips rather than large gulps, especially after vomiting.
• Do not add sugar, salt, milk or juice, and never mix with less water than instructed.
• Use the prepared solution within 24 hours and discard the rest. Keep breastfeeding infants during treatment.

Drug Interactions

• Potassium sparing diuretics: Medicines such as spironolactone can raise potassium levels when combined with potassium in ORS.
• ACE inhibitors and ARBs: These blood pressure medicines can also increase potassium, so use with care.
• Potassium or salt supplements: Extra supplements on top of ORS can push levels too high.

Risks and warnings

• Wrong dilution: Too little water makes the drink too salty, which can be harmful, especially for infants.
• Not a cure for the cause: It replaces lost fluid only. Blood in stool, high fever or diarrhea lasting more than two days needs a doctor.
• Kidney or heart problems: People with kidney disease or heart failure should use it only under medical advice because of the salt and potassium.
• Severe dehydration: Extreme drowsiness, sunken eyes or no urine need urgent hospital care and possibly a drip.
