What Experts Say
Piroxicam belongs to the oxicam class of NSAIDs and works by blocking both COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, which cuts down the production of prostaglandins responsible for pain, swelling, and fever. This broad enzyme blockade is what makes it effective across many types of joint and muscle pain conditions.
Its long elimination half life, often more than 24 hours, means a single daily dose can maintain steady drug levels in the blood, unlike many shorter acting NSAIDs that need two or three doses a day. This is convenient but also means side effects can take longer to clear once the drug is stopped completely.
Because piroxicam carries one of the higher gastrointestinal bleeding risks among NSAIDs, most guidelines recommend using the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time, combined with a stomach protecting medicine whenever longer term use cannot be avoided in daily clinical practice.
