What Experts Say
Codeine is a mild opioid that the body partly converts into morphine to relieve pain, while paracetamol adds separate pain relieving action. Together they cover pain that paracetamol alone cannot fully control.
In Pakistan, this combination is prescribed after dental extractions, orthopedic injuries, and minor surgery. Doctors are careful to limit the duration of use because codeine can cause dependence if taken regularly for more than a short course.
Because codeine can cause drowsiness and slow breathing at high doses, this medicine is sold only on prescription. Patients are usually advised against driving or operating machinery until they know how it affects them.
