What Experts Say
Meropenem belongs to the carbapenem class of antibiotics. It works by binding to penicillin-binding proteins on the bacterial cell wall, which stops the bacteria from building a protective outer layer. Without this wall, the bacteria cannot survive and the infection clears.
Hospitals across Pakistan rely on meropenem 500mg IV injection for patients with severe infections who have not responded to first-line antibiotics or who carry drug-resistant organisms. Its broad coverage against gram-positive, gram-negative and anaerobic bacteria makes it a preferred choice in intensive care settings, especially where local resistance patterns limit the effectiveness of older antibiotics.
Doctors monitor kidney function closely during treatment, since the dose needs adjustment in patients with reduced renal clearance. Prolonged or repeated use is watched carefully because it can trigger antibiotic resistance and secondary infections like Clostridioides difficile colitis. This injection should only be given under direct medical supervision in a hospital or clinic setting.
