What Experts Say
Clopidogrel blocks a receptor on platelets called P2Y12, stopping platelets from clumping together, while aspirin blocks a different pathway involving an enzyme called cyclooxygenase. Using both together, known as dual antiplatelet therapy, gives broader protection against clot formation than either drug alone.
Cardiologists in Pakistan commonly prescribe this combination after a heart attack or after a stent is placed in a coronary artery, since the risk of clot formation at the stent site is highest in the months following the procedure. The exact duration of dual therapy depends on the type of stent and the patient's individual bleeding and clotting risk.
Patients are advised never to stop this medicine on their own, especially soon after stenting, since sudden discontinuation raises the risk of stent thrombosis. Any planned surgery or dental procedure is discussed with the cardiologist well in advance because of bleeding risk.

- Other blood thinners: Combining with warfarin or other anticoagulants significantly raises bleeding risk.
- NSAIDs such as ibuprofen: These pain relievers add to the bleeding and stomach irritation risk of this combination.
- Alcohol: Regular alcohol use can increase stomach irritation and bleeding risk with this medicine.
Risks and warnings
- Bleeding risk: This dual antiplatelet combination increases the risk of bleeding, including bruising, nosebleeds, and, rarely, serious internal bleeding.
- Gastrointestinal bleeding: The aspirin component raises the chance of stomach irritation and ulcers, particularly with long term use.
- Surgical bleeding risk: Stopping this medicine before elective surgery must be planned carefully with the treating doctor because of clotting risk if stopped too early.
- Rare blood disorders: Clopidogrel has rarely been linked to a serious blood clotting disorder called thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.
