What Experts Say
Betamethasone is a potent corticosteroid that works by calming the immune response in affected tissue. Physicians prescribe it to reduce swelling, redness and discomfort linked to eye, ear or nose inflammation. A noticeable easing of itching and irritation is common within a few days of regular use.
Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic included to prevent or treat bacterial infection alongside the inflammation. Its bactericidal action targets a broad range of bacteria common in eye, ear and nasal infections. This dual action explains why combination drops are often preferred over a steroid alone.
Extended use of steroid containing drops carries risk, including raised eye pressure and slower wound healing, so treatment duration is normally limited. Overuse of the antibiotic component can also encourage resistant bacteria. Regular follow up with a doctor keeps the treatment both safe and effective.
