What Experts Say

Phenazopyridine is a urinary tract analgesic that is passed in the urine and soothes the irritated lining of the bladder and urethra. It relieves symptoms only and does not kill bacteria. A UTI therefore still needs an antibiotic prescribed by a doctor.

It is normally used for no more than 2 days alongside an antibiotic. Harmless orange or red urine discoloration is expected and can stain clothes and contact lenses. Taking the tablet after meals reduces stomach upset.

It should not be used by people with kidney disease, liver disease or G6PD deficiency. Burning that lasts beyond 2 days, fever, back pain or blood in the urine needs a doctor visit. Many Pakistani women self medicate for UTIs, but a urine test should confirm the cause. Drinking plenty of water supports recovery. Tell the doctor about any pregnancy or kidney problem before starting. Urinary symptoms that keep returning also deserve a full workup.

How to use Pyridine tablet 100mg?

• Adults: one 100 mg tablet three times a day after meals, as prescribed.
• Take with a full glass of water.
• Use for no more than 2 days when combined with an antibiotic for a UTI.
• Stop and consult a doctor if symptoms continue or get worse.

Drug Interactions

• Antibiotics for UTI: Often used together, with the antibiotic treating the infection.
• Urine tests: It can interfere with urine color and glucose or ketone readings.
• Drugs harming the kidneys: Using it with other kidney toxic medicines raises risk.
• Other urinary analgesics: Duplicate use should be avoided.
