What Experts Say
Physicians favor piroxicam when a once daily NSAID is needed for chronic joint pain, since its long half life allows steady pain control with a single dose taken at the same time each day. Doctors across Pakistan weigh this convenience against a higher gastrointestinal risk compared with shorter acting NSAIDs.
Because piroxicam carries a documented risk of stomach irritation and bleeding, physicians generally prescribe the lowest effective dose for the shortest period needed to control symptoms. Regular review is recommended for patients on long term therapy, particularly older adults and those with a prior ulcer history.
Monitoring kidney function and blood pressure is part of routine practice when piroxicam is used for more than a few weeks, since NSAIDs can reduce renal blood flow over time. Physicians also caution patients with heart disease, since prolonged NSAID use is linked to a modest added cardiovascular risk.
