What Experts Say
Ramipril belongs to the ACE inhibitor class and works by relaxing blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure and reduces the workload on the heart. The 1.25mg strength is the lowest available dose of Ramipace and is almost always the starting point for treatment rather than a long term dose. This cautious approach protects the body from a sharp fall in blood pressure during the first days of therapy.
Doctors usually begin therapy at 1.25mg in patients who are elderly, have reduced kidney function, or are already on diuretics, since these groups are more sensitive to a sudden drop in blood pressure. Starting low reduces the chance of dizziness or fainting after the first few doses and allows the kidneys to adjust safely.
Once the body tolerates this low dose well, physicians typically review blood pressure, kidney function and potassium levels before increasing the strength gradually. Patients should not assume 1.25mg is a permanent dose without follow up, as most people eventually need a higher maintenance dose for full cardiovascular protection.
