What Experts Say
Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drug that reduces the production of prostaglandins, chemicals in the body responsible for pain, swelling and inflammation. This action eases joint pain and stiffness in conditions such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
At the doses commonly used for arthritis, meloxicam shows some preference for the COX 2 enzyme over COX 1, which is linked to a somewhat lower risk of stomach irritation compared with older nonselective NSAIDs, though the risk is not eliminated entirely. Regular use is generally intended for chronic joint conditions rather than everyday minor aches and pains.
Because NSAIDs can affect the stomach lining, kidneys and heart, meloxicam is classified as a prescription medicine in Pakistan and is usually prescribed at the lowest effective dose for the shortest reasonable duration, with periodic review for patients on long term therapy.
