What Experts Say
Enalapril maleate works by blocking the angiotensin converting enzyme, which reduces production of angiotensin II and lowers vascular resistance. This mechanism explains its dual benefit in hypertension and in reducing cardiac workload in heart failure.
Physicians typically start therapy at a low dose and titrate upward based on blood pressure response and renal function, since a sudden drop in pressure can occur after the first dose in salt depleted patients. Regular monitoring of serum creatinine and potassium is recommended, particularly in older adults and those with pre existing kidney impairment.
Pakistan carries a high burden of hypertension and related cardiovascular disease, making ACE inhibitors like enalapril a frequently prescribed first line option. Physicians recommend consistent adherence and periodic renal function tests, since abrupt discontinuation or missed monitoring can affect long term outcomes in chronic use.
