What Experts Say
Theophylline is a methylxanthine bronchodilator. It works by relaxing the smooth muscles around the airways and reducing inflammation, which makes breathing easier in asthma and COPD. It also has a mild effect on the diaphragm muscle, helping improve breathing strength in chronic lung disease.
The sustained release form releases the drug slowly over twelve hours, keeping blood levels steady and reducing the highs and lows seen with regular tablets. This steady level helps control nighttime symptoms, a common problem in asthma and COPD. Because the safe dose range is narrow, doctors often check blood levels during treatment.
Experts caution that many common medicines and habits change how the body processes theophylline. Smoking speeds up clearance, while certain antibiotics slow it down, raising the risk of side effects. Regular monitoring and dose adjustment help keep treatment both effective and safe over the long term.
