What Experts Say

Permethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid that paralyzes and kills scabies mites and their eggs by disrupting their nervous system. Very little is absorbed through human skin. It is not effective against bacterial skin infections, so open, weeping sores may need a separate antibiotic.

Dermatology guidelines list 5% permethrin as a first line treatment for scabies. It is applied to the whole body from the neck down and washed off after several hours. Scabies spreads through close skin contact, so early treatment also protects family members.

Itching can continue for up to two to four weeks after the mites die, which is normal. Everyone in the household should be treated at the same time, and bedding and clothes washed in hot water. Wash bedding, towels and clothes in hot water, or seal them in a bag for several days. See a doctor if new blisters, pus or fever appear after treatment, or if itching is still severe after four weeks.

How to use ScabFree Lotion 5%?

• Apply ScabFree Lotion to clean, dry skin from the neck to the toes, including skin folds, under nails and between fingers.
• Leave it on for 8 to 14 hours, usually overnight, then wash off with a bath or shower.
• A second application after seven days may be advised if mites persist.
• Treat all household members and close contacts at the same time.

Drug Interactions

• Other skin products: Creams, oils or lotions applied just before ScabFree may reduce how well it works.
• Other pyrethroid or pyrethrin lice products: Using them together adds no benefit and can increase skin irritation.

Risks and warnings

• External use only: Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth and open wounds.
• Allergy: Do not use if you are allergic to permethrin, pyrethrins or chrysanthemums.
• Infants: Use in babies under two months only under medical supervision.
• Ongoing itching: Itching can last for weeks after treatment and does not always mean it failed.
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Ask your doctor before use.
