How to use Steron Syrup?

• Steron syrup can be taken with or without food, but taking it with food reduces stomach upset.
• Measure each dose carefully using the measuring cup or spoon provided.
• Do not stop Steron syrup suddenly after long-term use; always taper the dose with a doctor's guidance.

Contraindications

People with these conditions should generally avoid it unless a doctor specifically prescribes it:

• Allergy to prednisolone or corticosteroids
• Systemic fungal infections
• Untreated serious infections (bacterial, viral, or fungal)
• Recent live vaccines while taking high doses of steroids
• Severe stomach ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding
• Uncontrolled diabetes
• Severe hypertension (high blood pressure)
• Severe liver disease
• Glaucoma or cataracts (needs caution)
• Osteoporosis
• Tuberculosis (TB) or a history of TB
• Kidney disease

Drug Interactions

• Aspirin and NSAIDs: Taking these together with Steron syrup increases the risk of stomach ulcers and bleeding.
• Antidiabetic medicines: Steron syrup raises blood sugar levels, so diabetes medicines may need dose adjustment.
• Warfarin and blood thinners: Prednisolone can change how blood thinners work, which may affect clotting.
• Rifampicin and phenytoin: These medicines reduce prednisolone's effectiveness by speeding up its breakdown in the body.
• Diuretics (water pills): Taking them with Steron syrup can lower potassium levels too much.
• Antifungal medicines (ketoconazole): These increase prednisolone levels in the blood, raising the risk of side effects.

Risks and warnings

• Active infections: Steron syrup suppresses the immune system, which can mask infection symptoms and allow infections to worsen without clear warning signs.
• Diabetes: Prednisolone raises blood sugar levels. Patients with diabetes need more frequent blood glucose monitoring during treatment.
• Peptic ulcers or stomach problems: Steron syrup increases the risk of stomach ulcers, especially when taken with pain medicines like ibuprofen.
• Osteoporosis: Long-term use of prednisolone weakens bones. Patients on extended courses may need calcium and vitamin D supplements.
• Mood and mental health: Some patients experience mood swings, anxiety, or sleep problems during treatment. Report any severe mental health changes to a doctor.
• Adrenal suppression: Long-term use can suppress the body's natural steroid production. Never stop Steron syrup suddenly after extended use.
• Chickenpox and measles exposure: Patients on prednisolone who are exposed to chickenpox or measles need urgent medical attention, as these infections can become life-threatening.
• Pregnancy: Steron syrup should only be used during pregnancy if the doctor determines that the benefits outweigh the risks.
• Breastfeeding: Prednisolone passes into breast milk. A doctor must be consulted before breastfeeding during treatment.
• Elderly patients: Older adults are more sensitive to prednisolone's effects on bones, blood pressure, and blood sugar. Closer monitoring is needed.
