What Experts Say
Cinnarizine is an antihistamine that also blocks calcium channels in the balance organs of the inner ear. This lowers the extra signals that trigger vertigo, dizziness and vomiting. Its effect on the inner ear also makes it useful in some circulation related dizziness.
Doctors commonly prescribe it for inner ear disorders such as Meniere disease and for prevention of motion sickness. It works best when taken regularly for vertigo or before travel begins. Many people notice improvement within days, though full benefit for chronic vertigo can take longer.
Drowsiness is the most common complaint, so care is needed while driving. Long term use in older adults has been linked to stiffness and tremor, which is why the shortest useful course is preferred. Older adults should be reviewed regularly, and it should be stopped if tremor or stiffness appears. A doctor can suggest safer options when needed.
