About Tasigna Capsule 150mg
Tasigna Capsule 150mg contains Nilotinib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor used for chronic myeloid leukemia.
Tasigna Capsule 150mg Uses
- Newly diagnosed chronic phase, Philadelphia chromosome positive chronic myeloid leukemia (CML)
- Chronic phase CML in patients resistant to or intolerant of prior Imatinib therapy
Tasigna Capsule 150mg Benefits
- Blocks the BCR ABL fusion protein that drives leukemic cell growth
- Achieves deeper and faster molecular response than Imatinib in many patients
- Taken orally, avoiding the need for infusion based chemotherapy in most cases
- Effective second line option when Imatinib stops working or causes intolerance
What Experts Say
Oncologists prescribe Tasigna Capsule 150mg for chronic myeloid leukemia that is Philadelphia chromosome positive, either as initial therapy for newly diagnosed chronic phase disease or after a patient stops responding to first line Imatinib. As a second generation tyrosine kinase inhibitor, it blocks the BCR ABL fusion protein driving leukemic cell growth more potently than Imatinib in many patients.
The capsule must always be taken on an empty stomach, since food significantly increases Nilotinib absorption and raises the risk of QT prolongation, a boxed warning for this drug. Doctors order a baseline ECG and repeat electrolyte checks throughout treatment, correcting low potassium or magnesium before every dose adjustment.
Physicians managing CML patients stress strict adherence, since missed or inconsistent dosing can allow resistant leukemic clones to re emerge. Regular blood counts and liver function tests are checked throughout therapy, and any strong CYP3A4 inhibiting medicine is avoided or substituted to keep Nilotinib levels, and cardiac risk, within a safe range.

Drug Interactions
- Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir): Raise Nilotinib levels and QT prolongation risk, generally avoided
- Strong CYP3A4 inducers (rifampicin, carbamazepine, St John's Wort): Lower Nilotinib levels and reduce effectiveness
- Other QT prolonging medicines (certain antiarrhythmics and antipsychotics): Increase risk of dangerous heart rhythm changes
- Antacids, H2 blockers, and proton pump inhibitors: Can alter Nilotinib absorption and require spaced dosing
Risks and warnings
- QT prolongation: Boxed warning for a heart rhythm change that can lead to sudden death, avoid in patients with uncorrected low potassium or magnesium
- Empty stomach requirement: Taking capsules with food substantially raises drug levels and cardiac risk
- Myelosuppression: Can lower white cells, red cells, and platelets, requiring regular blood count monitoring
- Hepatotoxicity: Liver enzymes and bilirubin must be checked periodically
- Pancreatitis: Rare but reported, monitor for persistent abdominal pain
- Pregnancy: Can harm a developing fetus, effective contraception is advised during treatment
