What Experts Say
Lansoprazole belongs to the proton pump inhibitor class, medicines that block the final step of acid production inside the stomach lining. By binding to the proton pump, it suppresses acid output more completely and for a longer duration than older acid reducing medicines such as antacids.
This strong acid suppression gives irritated stomach and esophageal tissue time to heal, which is why proton pump inhibitors are considered first line treatment for ulcers and acid reflux disease. The full effect builds over a few days of regular dosing rather than acting instantly like an antacid tablet.
Long term acid suppression can reduce absorption of certain nutrients such as vitamin B12 and magnesium, so periodic review with a doctor is useful during extended treatment. Most patients tolerate lansoprazole well when it is used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest necessary duration.
