Chlorhexidine works by disrupting the outer membrane of bacteria, which kills or stops the growth of germs on the skin surface.

Applying it to the umbilical cord stump soon after birth is recommended in community and home birth settings to lower the risk of newborn infection and sepsis.

It should be used exactly as directed by the birth attendant or doctor, and should never be applied to the eyes, ears or inside the mouth.

How to use Umbilica Gel?

• Apply a thin layer to the umbilical cord stump once, soon after birth, or as directed.
• Use clean hands or a sterile applicator when applying.
• Do not apply to the eyes, ears or mouth.
• Follow the birth attendant's instructions for the number of applications needed.

Drug Interactions

Umbilica Gel is applied topically and has minimal risk of interacting with other medicines.

• Other topical antiseptics or soaps: Avoid combining with other antiseptic products on the same area, since this can reduce effectiveness or increase irritation.

• Eye contact: Avoid contact with the eyes, rinse well with water if it happens.
• Broken skin: Use with caution on broken or irritated skin.
• Allergy: Stop use if redness, swelling or irritation develops at the site.
• External use only: Not for oral or internal use.
