What Experts Say
Venlafaxine works by blocking the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. At higher doses, it also has a mild effect on dopamine reuptake. This dual action increases the availability of these mood regulating neurotransmitters at nerve synapses, which helps correct the chemical imbalance associated with depression and anxiety disorders.
Clinical response usually takes two to four weeks to become noticeable, since neurotransmitter receptors need time to adjust to the higher chemical availability. Doses are typically started low and increased gradually to reduce side effects and allow the body to adapt. Missing this titration step can raise the risk of nausea, dizziness, or a spike in blood pressure.
Because venlafaxine affects norepinephrine as well as serotonin, it carries a modest risk of raising blood pressure, unlike medicines that act on serotonin alone. Stopping the drug abruptly can trigger dizziness, irritability, and flu like symptoms, so tapering under medical guidance is standard practice.
