What Experts Say
Cetirizine is a second generation antihistamine that blocks H1 receptors involved in the allergic response. It crosses the blood brain barrier slightly more than fexofenadine, so a small number of users notice mild drowsiness, though it remains far less sedating than older antihistamines like chlorpheniramine.
The standard adult dose is 10mg once daily, usually taken in the evening if drowsiness is a concern. Doctors adjust the dose downward in patients with reduced kidney or liver function, since cetirizine is cleared mainly through the kidneys and can accumulate if clearance is impaired.
Physicians across Pakistan commonly recommend cetirizine for year round allergic rhinitis, dust and pollen sensitivity and chronic hives, given how often these conditions present in general practice and emergency clinics. Its once daily dosing and low cost make it a practical long term option for patients managing recurring seasonal symptoms.
