Vonozan contains vonoprazan, a potassium competitive acid blocker. It works by blocking the acid pump in stomach cells, so less acid is made. This lets ulcers heal and calms burning in the food pipe. It belongs to a newer class of acid blocking medicines than proton pump inhibitors.

Drug Interactions

• Atazanavir and rilpivirine: These HIV medicines need stomach acid to be absorbed, so they must not be combined with vonoprazan.
• Rifampicin: This medicine can lower vonoprazan levels and should be avoided together.
• Itraconazole and ketoconazole: Absorption of these antifungals may drop when stomach acid is reduced.

Risks and warnings

• Alarm symptoms: Difficulty swallowing, black stools, vomiting blood or unexplained weight loss need urgent evaluation, as acid blockers can hide serious causes.
• Liver disease: Use with caution and only under medical advice in significant liver impairment.
