How to use Wax Aid Drops?
- Wax Aid drops should be warmed in the hand before use
- The head is tilted so the treated ear faces upward
- Lying with that ear upward for five to ten minutes helps the drops work
- Cotton buds must never be used to dig out the softened wax
- Any wax that does not clear should be removed by a doctor
Contraindications
- Not suitable for anyone with a burst or damaged eardrum
- Avoid in patients with ear discharge, bleeding or an ear infection
- Patients with grommets or recent ear surgery should not use these drops
- Those with a history of allergy to sodium bicarbonate or glycerin
Drug Interactions
- Antibiotic or steroid ear drops: the alkaline base can weaken their effect
- Olive oil and other oily wax removers: the oil layer washes these drops away
- Hydrogen peroxide ear preparations: combined use dries and irritates the ear canal
- Ear candles and cotton buds: they push softened wax deeper towards the eardrum
- Always tell your doctor about all medicines you are currently taking
Risks and warnings
- Ear pain or discharge: stop the drops and see a doctor straight away
- Cold drops: using them straight from a cool place can cause dizziness
- Dry ear canal: longer use leaves the skin dry, itchy and flaky
- Temporary blockage: hearing may feel worse before the wax clears
- Hearing aids: the aid is removed first and refitted once the ear is dry
- External use only: these drops are for the ear and never for the eyes or nose
- No improvement: wax still blocking after five days needs a doctor's review
