Z-Tek contains cetirizine, a second generation antihistamine that blocks histamine H1 receptors in the skin, nose and eyes. Histamine is released during an allergic response, and blocking its receptor prevents the sneezing, itching and swelling that follow exposure to an allergen such as pollen, dust, or pet dander.

Because cetirizine does not cross into the brain as easily as first generation antihistamines like diphenhydramine, it is far less likely to cause heavy sedation.
