What Experts Say
Zinc is an essential trace mineral involved in immune cell function, wound healing and the enzymes that support normal growth in children. A zinc sulfate syrup provides an easily absorbed liquid form of this mineral, useful for young children who cannot swallow tablets.
The World Health Organization recommends zinc supplementation alongside oral rehydration solution during acute diarrhea in children, since zinc helps repair the intestinal lining and shortens the illness. Pakistan continues to see a high burden of childhood diarrheal disease, making this a commonly recommended supportive therapy alongside standard fluid replacement.
Pediatricians usually recommend a course of ten to fourteen days during a diarrhea episode rather than open-ended use, since zinc requirements are already met through a normal diet in most well-nourished children. Extended high-dose use without medical advice is generally discouraged, since it can interfere with the absorption of copper and other essential minerals.

Drug Interactions
- Antibiotics (Tetracyclines And Quinolones): Zinc can reduce the absorption of these antibiotics if taken at the same time, so doses should be spaced apart.
- Iron Supplements: Taking zinc and iron together can reduce the absorption of both minerals.
- Copper Supplements: Long-term high-dose zinc can lower copper levels, so simultaneous use should be spaced or monitored.
- Penicillamine: Zinc may reduce the effectiveness of this medicine if taken together.
Risks and warnings
- Stomach Upset: Taking on an empty stomach can cause nausea or stomach cramps in some children.
- Copper Deficiency: Long-term high-dose use can interfere with copper absorption and lead to deficiency.
- Overdose Risk: Excess zinc intake can cause vomiting, diarrhea and headache, so the recommended dose should not be exceeded.
- Underlying Kidney Disease: Caution is needed in children with kidney problems, since zinc is cleared through the kidneys.
- Diabetic Patients: This syrup may contain sugar, so diabetic patients or caregivers of diabetic children should check with a doctor.
