How to use Vicks VapoBalm Ointment 19 g?
- Vicks VapoBalm ointment can be applied to the chest, throat, or back for cough and congestion relief.
- Rub the ointment gently into the skin in small, circular movements
- The ointment should be applied to muscles or joints for pain relief, then massaged in lightly
- Avoid covering the applied area with tight bandages or wrapping after use
- Do not apply this ointment directly inside the nostrils, on the face, or near the eyes
- Never heat or microwave this product before use, as it can cause burns
- Children under 2 years: not suitable for use without medical advice
Contraindications
- Known allergy to camphor, menthol, eucalyptus oil, or any other ingredient in this ointment
- Not suitable for children under 2 years of age under any circumstances
- Patients with epilepsy should avoid this product, as camphor vapors may trigger seizures
- Avoid in people with asthma or other chronic lung conditions, as strong vapors can worsen breathing
- Should not be applied to broken, wounded, or irritated skin
- Not recommended for use as steam inhalation in children under 6 years
Drug Interactions
- Inhaled asthma medications: Strong vapors from this ointment may interfere with rescue inhalers or nebulizers; apply at least one hour apart
- Other camphor or menthol products: Using multiple products containing these ingredients together can increase the risk of skin irritation or sensitization
- Topical analgesics: Applying this ointment over other topical pain creams on the same area may cause increased irritation or reduce the effectiveness of both products
- High-dose aspirin or salicylate medicines: Camphor shares chemical properties with salicylates; patients on salicylate-restricted regimens should use this product cautiously
Risks and warnings
- Epilepsy: This ointment must not be used by people with epilepsy, as camphor can lower the seizure threshold
- Asthma or chronic lung disease: Strong aromatic vapors can irritate sensitive airways and trigger breathing difficulty in some patients
- Accidental ingestion risk: This product must be stored out of reach of children and never swallowed, as camphor is toxic when ingested
- Persistent cough: A cough lasting more than 7 days, or one accompanied by fever, rash, or headache, requires medical evaluation.
- Skin sensitivity: Patients with sensitive or reactive skin may experience a burning or stinging sensation; wash off immediately if this occurs
- Pregnancy: This product can be used as directed during pregnancy, but hands must be washed after application to prevent accidental ingestion of camphor
- Breastfeeding: Avoid applying this ointment to the chest or breast area while breastfeeding, as vapors may affect the baby's breathing
