Hair transplants are done to add more hair to an area on your head that may be thinning or balding. It’s done by taking hair from thicker parts of the scalp, or other parts of the body, and grafting it to the thinning or balding section of the scalp.

However, the hottest question remains: Do hair transplants actually work?

To seek professional advice on the important subject, Oladoc invited an expert hair transplant surgeon in Lahore, Dr. Burhan Ashraf to share his expert opinion. Dr. Burhan did his MBBS from King Edward Medical University and is an American Board Certified hair surgeon.

Q.1. What is the procedure of a hair transplant?

Mute/Unmute Mute/Unmute

There are three kinds of hair transplants that are commonly used these days; FUT, in which a strip of hair is used and FUE, in which the single hair are stripped. The third procedure is the one in which both are combined.

I would like to say that false advertisement of painless or “cut less” are totally false. A doctor can’t possibly pluck the hair out without applying a cut.

Also, with proper anaesthesia, the patient will feel minimal pain, if any.

After collecting the hair, designing of the hair is done with the plucked hair. The procedure takes around 8 to 10 hours.

Q.2. What is the average cost of a hair transplant?

There are many conceptions regarding the cost of a hair transplant. A good hair transplant starts at around 70, 000 PKR. The prices also depend on the number of sessions and the type of procedure used.

Q.3. What are the risk factors involved in these procedures?

As we discussed before, hair transplant surgery is indeed a process in which there might be risk factors. If you are getting your hair transplant done from a very unhygienic place with poor sterilisation practices, then you might be at risk.

Also, always get your hair transplant done from an American board-certified hair transplant surgeon. Quality hair transplant surgeon will take care of sterilisation, hygiene and provide a superior designing technique.

Lastly, the surgeon must take the candidates history into account as well such as diabetes and other health issues.

Q.4. Are there any side effects of a hair transplant?

Well, because it is a surgical procedure, there are side effects involved. Some side-effects are short-lived and others may be long-lasting. Some short-lived side effects include swelling on the forehead, forehead pain. Also, the head must be protected in the days after the surgery due to greater chances of infection and sun damage.

Long-term side effects include pimples on the forehead, changes in the sensation of the scalp.

All of the side effects can be controlled by proper medication.

Q.5. How does one take care of their hair after the surgery?

Well, the first 5 to 7 days after the surgery are very important. Your surgeon will most likely recommend you medicines such as antibiotics and painkillers. You need to rest for 3 days before settling into your daily activities.

You must also protect your head from dust by wearing a surgical cap.
