- Perennial allergic rhinitis caused by year-round indoor allergens including house dust mites, pet dander, and mold.
- Chronic spontaneous urticaria presenting as persistent raised, itchy welts on the skin lasting 6 weeks or more.
- Acute urticaria triggered by identifiable allergens.
- Allergic conjunctivitis causing redness, itching, and watering of the eyes.

Rigix Tablet Benefits
- Provides 24-hour allergy relief from a single once-daily dose, eliminating the need for multiple daily dosing.
- Significantly less sedating than first-generation antihistamines such as Chlorphenamine, making it suitable for daytime use without impairing work or study.
- Effective for both nasal symptoms and skin symptoms, covering a broader range of allergy presentations than single-target medicines.
- Starts working within 1 hour of taking the dose with peak effect at 1 to 2 hours.
- Safe for long-term daily use in patients with chronic conditions such as perennial allergic rhinitis and chronic urticaria without causing tolerance or dependence.
- Suitable for adults and children above 6 years, making it a practical household allergy medicine.
What Experts Say
Rigix contains Cetirizine Hydrochloride, a second-generation H1 receptor antagonist that selectively blocks peripheral histamine receptors. When allergens trigger mast cells to release histamine, it binds to H1 receptors in the nasal mucosa, skin, and eyes, causing sneezing, itching, and urticaria. Cetirizine occupies these receptors before histamine can bind, preventing the allergic response.
Unlike first-generation antihistamines such as Chlorphenamine, Cetirizine is actively transported out of the brain by P-glycoprotein efflux pumps, keeping CNS penetration low. This explains its reduced sedation profile and suitability for daytime use. It also has mild anti-inflammatory properties including inhibition of eosinophil migration, adding to its effectiveness in atopic dermatitis beyond simple H1 blockade.
Cetirizine is the active metabolite of Hydroxyzine and retains its antipruritic potency without causing profound sedation. It is primarily eliminated through the kidneys, requiring dose reduction in renal impairment. Elderly patients are more sensitive to its effects and should use the lowest effective dose.

How to use Rigix Tablet 10mg?
- Rigix may be taken with or without food.
- The tablet should be swallowed whole with a full glass of water.
- Rigix should be taken at the same time each day for consistent allergy protection.
- Alcohol must be avoided during treatment as it significantly enhances the sedative effect of Cetirizine.
- The standard adult dose is 10mg once daily. In patients with mild to moderate kidney impairment, 5mg once daily is recommended.
- The dose should not be increased without consulting a doctor.
Drug Interactions
Cetirizine has a limited drug interaction profile due to its minimal hepatic metabolism. However, the following should be noted:
- Alcohol: Concurrent use significantly enhances CNS depression and increases the risk of drowsiness and impaired coordination. Must be avoided during treatment.
- CNS depressants including sedatives, anxiolytics, and opioids: Additive sedation increases the risk of excessive drowsiness.
- Theophylline: At high doses, Theophylline may slightly reduce the clearance of Cetirizine, increasing its blood levels.
- Ritonavir: This antiretroviral increases Cetirizine blood levels by approximately 40%. Dose reduction may be required.
Risks and warnings
- Kidney disease: Cetirizine is primarily excreted by the kidneys. Patients with renal impairment require dose reduction. Rigix is contraindicated in severe renal failure.
- Elderly patients: Older adults are more susceptible to the sedative effects of Cetirizine. The 5mg dose is preferable in patients above 65 years.
- Pregnancy: The safety of Cetirizine during pregnancy has not been fully established. It should only be used during pregnancy when the benefit clearly outweighs the risk.
- Breastfeeding: Cetirizine passes into breast milk. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.
- Driving and machinery: Rigix may cause mild drowsiness in some patients. Caution is advised when driving or operating heavy machinery until the individual response is known.
- Alcohol: Concurrent alcohol use significantly increases the risk of sedation and impaired coordination. Alcohol must be avoided throughout treatment.
- Children under 6: Rigix 10mg is not recommended for children under 6 years. Children aged 6 to 12 years should take 5mg once daily as directed by a doctor.
