The HPV DNA test checks the sample cells for the presence of human papillomavirus. The virus can cause genital warts, changes in the cervical cells, and even cervical cancer. Until now, the HPV test can be done for women only. However, men can catch the virus and transmit it sexually to their partners. But there is no screening method for it.
HPV, or human papillomavirus, is most commonly transmitted through sexual contact. When sexually active, you must get a vaccine to prevent this infection. The human papillomavirus can cause infection and lead to changes in the cervix cells. It can then lead to cervical cancer. Therefore if you are sexually active, you must get vaccinated against it. And get screened for it off and on through an HPV DNA test.
The HPV DNA test is used to know about the presence of the human papillomavirus and if it has caused changes in your cervical cells. It does not help your healthcare providers know about the cancerous or precancerous stage of cervical cancer. But it can help them know about the presence of the virus that can lead to cervical cancer.
When detected early, the chances of recovery from cervical cancer are there. But if it spreads to other body parts, it can become difficult to treat. Therefore if you are sexually active, your healthcare provider may ask you to get it done for screening to know if human papillomavirus is present in the cervix.
You should get an HPV DNA test done when your healthcare provider advises you to get it. They will usually advise you if:
The HPV DNA test is often done with a Pap smear. The healthcare providers take the cells from your cervix. For that, you will have to undress, either completely or from your bottom, and lie on your back, on the examination table. With your knees bent, you will put your foot on the stirrups.
The healthcare provider will insert a speculum in your vagina. It will help them scrape cervical cells with ease. The speculum might feel cold or give you a feeling of pressure in the pelvic region. But the procedure will take a few minutes. The healthcare provider will take a sample of your cervical cells and send it to the lab for further evaluation under the microscope.
After the procedure, you might not have any pain. However, you might feel a bit uncomfortable. It is better to have someone with you who can drive for you to take you home. However, you can carry all activities as your routine.
The HPV DNA test is done to know about the presence of the human papillomavirus. Therefore it will come out as negative or positive. If it comes positive, your healthcare provider will ask you to get it done again in a year to check if the infection has cleared out. A positive HPV test does not mean that you have cervical cancer. But it puts you at risk of developing it.
As such, there is no risk of an HPV DNA test. However, you might have pain or discomfort in the pelvic region. For that, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers. Sometimes, when the instruments are not disinfected and clean, you might develop a vaginal infection due to an HPV test. You must keep an eye on its symptoms.
It might take more than two days to get the results of the HPV DNA test.
