What Experts Say
ACT-HIB contains purified capsular polysaccharide from Haemophilus influenzae type b, chemically linked to a tetanus toxoid protein carrier. This conjugation allows a young immune system, which normally responds poorly to plain polysaccharide antigens on their own, to mount a strong and lasting antibody response instead.
Because infant immune systems recognize protein antigens far more effectively than sugar based ones, the tetanus toxoid conjugate helps the body generate memory immune cells alongside antibodies. This is why the vaccine is given as a multi dose primary series in early infancy rather than as a single injection.
Vaccine pharmacology data show that completing the full recommended dose schedule is what produces durable protection, since a partial series leaves antibody levels too low for reliable long term immunity. This is why healthcare providers stress finishing every scheduled dose on time and record each dose carefully.
