What Experts Say
Doxorubicin is an anthracycline chemotherapy drug that works by slipping into the DNA of fast growing cancer cells. This blocks the enzymes cells need to copy their DNA and divide, which stops tumor growth and eventually causes the cancer cells to die.
Oncologists in major Pakistani cities, including Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, give this injection through a hospital or clinic infusion under close supervision, never as a take home medicine. Treatment is planned in cycles spaced a few weeks apart, with blood tests and heart function checks done before each cycle.
Doxorubicin can weaken the heart muscle over time, especially at higher cumulative lifetime doses, so doctors track the total amount given very carefully. It also lowers blood cell counts, which raises the risk of infection, bruising and bleeding, so regular blood monitoring is essential throughout treatment.
Drug Class
- Anthracycline chemotherapy agent (antineoplastic)
