About Airtal Tablet 100mg

Airtal tablet uses include treating joint pain, arthritis, and muscle inflammation.

Airtal Tablet Uses

  • Rheumatoid arthritis, including joint pain, swelling, and morning stiffness.
  • Osteoarthritis, including pain and reduced mobility in the knees, hips, and hands.
  • Ankylosing spondylitis affecting the spine and sacroiliac joints.
  • Cervicalgia (neck pain) caused by cervical spondylosis or muscle tension.
  • Lumbago and lumbosciatica (lower back pain radiating to the leg).
  • Tendinitis and soft tissue inflammation including sprains and strains.
  • Scapulohumeral periarthritis (shoulder pain and stiffness).
  • Myalgia (muscle pain) of various causes.
  • Primary dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps).
  • Post-labour and post-episiotomy pain.
  • Toothache and dental pain (odontalgia).

Airtal Tablet Benefits

  • Provides effective relief from both acute and chronic inflammatory pain with a twice-daily dosing schedule.
  • Produces less gastrointestinal irritation than older NSAIDs such as Diclofenac and Ibuprofen, making it better tolerated in patients with sensitive stomachs.
  • Shown in clinical studies to stimulate cartilage matrix synthesis, which may offer a degree of protection to joint tissue beyond simple pain relief.
  • Acts on both COX enzymes and the lipooxygenase pathway, providing broader anti-inflammatory coverage than selective COX-2 inhibitors alone.
  • Effective across a wide range of pain conditions from arthritis to post-operative and gynaecological pain, reducing the need for multiple analgesics.

What Experts Say

Airtal contains Aceclofenac, a phenylacetic acid derivative NSAID that inhibits both cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzymes. These enzymes catalyze the conversion of arachidonic acid into prostaglandins, the primary chemical mediators of pain, swelling, and fever at sites of tissue injury. By blocking prostaglandin synthesis, Aceclofenac reduces peripheral sensitization of pain receptors and decreases the inflammatory response in affected joints and soft tissues.

What distinguishes Aceclofenac from older NSAIDs such as Diclofenac is its dual metabolic profile. A significant proportion of Aceclofenac is converted in the body to 4-hydroxy Aceclofenac and, to a lesser extent, to Diclofenac itself. This metabolite activity partially explains Aceclofenac's clinical effectiveness. Importantly, Aceclofenac has been shown in vitro to stimulate the synthesis of interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra), which inhibits the destructive effects of IL-1 on cartilage. This cartilage-protective effect, while not yet fully established in large clinical trials, distinguishes Aceclofenac from standard NSAIDs and has made it a preferred choice among rheumatologists for long-term arthritis management.

Aceclofenac has a preferential but not selective inhibitory effect on COX-2, which contributes to its relatively better gastrointestinal tolerability compared to non-selective NSAIDs. However, it is not a COX-2 selective inhibitor and carries the same class-wide cardiovascular and renal warnings as other NSAIDs. Clinicians should assess the cardiovascular risk profile before initiating long-term Aceclofenac therapy and prescribe the lowest effective dose for the shortest necessary duration.
