What Experts Say
Chlorpheniramine maleate belongs to the first generation antihistamine class, working by blocking H1 histamine receptors in the body. This action stops histamine from triggering the sneezing, itching and watery eyes associated with allergic reactions. Because it crosses into the brain, it also produces a noticeable sedative effect compared to newer antihistamines.
This sedation is the main reason clinicians ask patients to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery after a dose, particularly the first time it is taken. People with narrow angle glaucoma, an enlarged prostate or asthma flare ups are usually advised to avoid this medicine, since it can worsen these specific conditions.
For simple seasonal allergies and mild allergic skin reactions, short term use for a few days is generally considered safe for most healthy adults. Doctors still recommend seeking medical advice if sneezing, itching or nasal congestion continues beyond a week, since persistent symptoms may need a different treatment approach or further evaluation.
