What Experts Say
Fexofenadine is a second generation antihistamine that selectively blocks peripheral H1 receptors involved in allergic reactions. Unlike first generation antihistamines, it does not readily cross the blood brain barrier, so it causes far less sedation than older options like chlorpheniramine or diphenhydramine, making it suitable for daytime use.
Clinical guidelines list fexofenadine as a first line option for allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria because it reliably controls sneezing, nasal itching, watery eyes and skin hives, without significantly affecting alertness, concentration or the ability to drive or study through the day.
Absorption can be reduced by nearly half if the tablet is taken together with fruit juices such as apple, orange or grapefruit juice, so plain water is recommended instead. People with reduced kidney function should seek medical advice on dosing, since a portion of the drug is cleared through the kidneys and levels can rise if clearance slows.
