What Experts Say
Omeprazole belongs to the proton pump inhibitor class of medicines. It works by binding irreversibly to the acid producing pumps in the stomach lining, which reduces the amount of acid the stomach can release. This lowers acidity in the digestive tract and allows irritated tissue in the esophagus or stomach lining to heal.
A 40mg dose is generally reserved for more severe acid related conditions such as active ulcers, erosive esophagitis, or Zollinger Ellison syndrome, rather than routine mild heartburn. In Pakistan, spicy diets, irregular meal timings, and frequent NSAID use for pain contribute to a high burden of acid reflux and peptic ulcer disease.
Doctors usually recommend the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration needed, since long term proton pump inhibitor use is linked to reduced calcium and vitamin B12 absorption. Anyone using omeprazole for more than a few weeks without medical supervision should have their treatment reviewed by a doctor.
