What Experts Say
Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic that works differently from older antipsychotic drugs. Its action involves partial agonism at dopamine D2 and serotonin 5HT1A receptors, along with antagonism at serotonin 5HT2A receptors. This distinct mechanism helps stabilize dopamine activity instead of blocking it completely, a property thought to lower the risk of certain movement related side effects.
Clinical guidelines list Aripiprazole as a first line option for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and as an add on therapy for depression that has not responded fully to antidepressants alone. The 20mg tablet is generally used for full dose maintenance once the medicine has been increased gradually under medical supervision from a lower starting dose.
Regular follow up is recommended to monitor mood, movement symptoms, and metabolic markers such as blood sugar and weight. Aripiprazole generally carries a lower sedation and weight gain profile than some other antipsychotics, though response varies and dose adjustments are common in the first months of treatment.
