What Experts Say
Diclofenac works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes, lowering production of the prostaglandins responsible for pain, inflammation, and fever. Its gastro resistant tablet coating is designed to release the drug in the intestine rather than the stomach, reducing direct mucosal irritation.
Doctors reach for diclofenac when a patient needs stronger anti-inflammatory action than paracetamol can provide, particularly for inflammatory joint conditions. Prescribers typically use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration needed, since NSAID related cardiovascular and gastrointestinal risk climbs with prolonged use.
Regular use beyond a few weeks usually calls for monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function, and signs of gastrointestinal bleeding, since diclofenac can raise blood pressure and reduce kidney blood flow, especially in older patients or those already taking other blood pressure medicines.
