What Experts Say
Gabapentin works by calming overactive nerve signaling, which is why it helps both certain seizure disorders and chronic nerve pain conditions, even though these seem like very different problems. It does not relieve ordinary muscular or joint pain the way an NSAID does.
Diabetic neuropathy is a common reason for a Gabapentin prescription in Pakistan, given the country's high burden of type 2 diabetes and the nerve damage that can follow years of poorly controlled blood sugar. Neurologists usually start at a low dose and increase it gradually to limit drowsiness and dizziness.
Doctors caution patients against stopping this capsule abruptly, since a sudden withdrawal can trigger rebound anxiety, insomnia or even seizures in susceptible individuals. Any dose reduction is usually planned as a gradual taper, and combining it with opioids or alcohol is discouraged due to the added risk of slowed breathing.
