What Experts Say
Dry eye develops when the tear film that coats the eye surface becomes unstable or produces too few tears. The tear film has three layers, an oily outer layer, a watery middle layer and a mucin layer that anchors it to the cornea. When any layer weakens, tears evaporate too fast or spread unevenly, leaving the surface exposed and irritated.
Sodium hyaluronate is a naturally occurring molecule that binds and holds water many times its own weight. In lubricating eye drops it forms a smooth, viscoelastic layer over the cornea that slows tear evaporation and spreads evenly with each blink. This mucoadhesive quality helps the drop stay on the eye surface longer than a simple saline rinse, giving more consistent relief between doses.
Lubricating drops like these ease symptoms and protect the surface, but they do not correct an underlying cause such as blocked oil glands or low tear production. Anyone using drops daily for more than a few weeks without improvement should have an eye examination, since persistent dryness sometimes points to a condition that needs separate treatment.
