What Experts Say
The World Health Organization recommends artemether combined with lumefantrine as a first line treatment for uncomplicated falciparum malaria in most malaria endemic regions, including parts of Pakistan where seasonal outbreaks occur after monsoon rains. This combination is favored because it works on multiple stages of the malaria parasite's life cycle inside red blood cells.
Doctors in Sindh and southern Punjab often prescribe this combination during malaria season, since it clears parasites faster than older single drug options and lowers the risk of complications such as severe anemia. Public health programs in flood prone districts have adopted artemisinin combination therapy as the preferred option for confirmed falciparum cases.
Health experts note that the medicine works best when taken with fatty food, since lumefantrine absorption depends on dietary fat, and skipping doses raises the risk of the infection returning or becoming drug resistant. Patients are also advised to get follow up blood testing a few weeks after treatment to confirm the parasites have fully cleared.
